Masakuni Kineya - Kineya Seiho

Japanese: 杵屋正邦 - きねやせいほう
Masakuni Kineya - Kineya Seiho
Born: October 7, 1914, Tokyo
[Died] February 16, 1996. Tokyo Composer. Real name: Yoshikawa Hirohisa. Born into a Nagauta family as the son of the first generation Kineya Shoshiro, he became a Nagauta shamisen performer, but studied composition under Kanematsu Akihiro. In 1943, he changed his name from the second generation Shoshiro to Masakuni, and gradually became a full-time composer. In addition to the shamisen, he composed works for the koto, biwa, shakuhachi, Japanese percussion instruments, and vocal music, and also worked on Western music, conducting orchestral works himself, making him a rare presence in the world of Japanese music. His representative works include the choral piece "Tanjosai" (Birth Festival), the shamisen solo piece "Kyourai" (Recital), and the shakuhachi trio "Kazedo" (Wind Movement). He also led the Seiho Gakuen, nurturing many performers of contemporary music. In 1952, he received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize.
