Genpei grass - Genpei grass

Japanese:
Genpei grass - Genpei grass

It is an evergreen, semi-creeping wisteria of the Verbenaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae). It is also called Genpei vine. It is generally called by its genus name, Clerodendron (Clerodendrum). Native to West Africa, it has glossy, elliptical, egg-shaped leaves that grow opposite each other. From summer to autumn, it produces flower stalks from the leaf axils and produces panicle-shaped cymes. It has five white calyxes with a scarlet tubular corolla inside, and the beautiful contrast between the red and white is a beautiful feature. It is also called Genpei kusagi (stink tree) because the leaves give off a foul odor when crushed. It is grown in a pot, but is winter-intolerant, so it is cultivated in a greenhouse. It is easily propagated by cuttings that root. The rooted seedlings are planted in pots and grown by pinching off the tops. You can grow it shorter by treating it with a dwarfing agent. Grow it in partial shade in summer, and in full sun from autumn to spring. It can survive winter if the temperature is above 7°C.
