Bayonnaise rocks - Bayonnaise rocks

Bayonnaise rocks - Bayonnaise rocks
A group of reefs located south of the Izu Islands in Tokyo. They are also called the Bayonnaise Rocks. The area is 0.01 km2 . No plants grow on these reefs, and they are a resting place for migratory birds. The Kuroshio Current flows around the area, making them a good fishing ground for skipjack tuna. On the seabed to the east of the Bayonnaise Rocks is a submarine caldera volcano (→ submarine volcano, caldera) about 8 km in diameter, and the Bayonnaise Rocks are on the western edge of its outer rim. It is an active volcano, and in its 1946 eruption it created a 100 m high island, which soon sank. To the east of this submarine caldera volcano, about 10 km from the Bayonnaise Rocks, is Myojinsho, the central cone of a submarine composite volcano. Myojinsho erupted underwater in 1952, and the Japan Coast Guard's Hydrographic Department observation ship "Daigo Kaiyomaru" was lost during an investigation, with 31 people killed. Eruptions continued intermittently until 1970, and even after 1971 there were signs of volcanic activity, such as the surrounding seawater turning cloudy white.
