Tsuda Sogyu

Japanese:
Tsuda Sogyu
Year of death: April 20, 1591 (June 10, 1591)
Year of birth: Unknown. A wealthy merchant and tea master in Sakai during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Son of Tsuda Sotatsu. Also known as Tennojiya, commonly known as Sukegoro, Souki, Tenshin, or Koyūsai. Tennojiya Sukegoro of Zaimokuchō, mentioned in the Nembutsu Sashichō Nikki of 1535 (Tenbun 4), is presumed to be Souki. He had close ties with military commanders in the Kinai region and the Shimotsuke clan, who were officials at the Honganji temple, but he also became involved with Oda Nobunaga, who had entered Kyoto, and was a political merchant who is thought to have engaged in commercial activities ranging from Kinai to Kyushu, including managing his estates, selling taxes, and procuring supplies. It is said that he held a fief of 3,000 koku together with Imai Sokyu, and while a fief of 2,200 koku for Sokyu in Settsu in 1583 (Tensho 11) remains, only 182 koku for Souki is known to have been held in Yamashiro Uji. He was well known as a tea master, of course, and is said to have had over sixty disciples in Sakai (Choyandoki). He became Nobunaga's tea master along with Munehisa and Sen no Rikyu, and at the tea ceremony at Shokoku-ji Temple in April 1570, he was given a Ranjatai from the Shosoin Repository along with Rikyu. At the time of the Honno-ji Incident, he entertained Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sakai, and later became Toyotomi Hideyoshi's tea master, playing an important role at the great tea ceremonies at Daitoku-ji Temple and Kitano, and accompanying Hideyoshi on the Kyushu expedition and the attack on Kanto. He left behind records of tea ceremonies from 1565 to 1581, and his grave is at Nanshuji Temple in Sakai. <References> Nagashima Fukutaro, "Explanation of Tennoji-ya Kaiki" (Complete Collection of Classical Tea Ceremonies, Volumes 7 and 8)
