A city in southwestern California, USA. Population 182,000 (1994). It is located about 90 km east of Los Angeles, at the western foot of the San Bernardino Mountains, known as a mountain resort. Spanish missionaries visited the city in 1810 and named it after Saint Bernardino of Siena, Italy. In 1851, Mormons founded the town. They later returned to Utah, but it developed as the central city of the agricultural region of the San Bernardino Valley, focusing on citrus fruits and grapes.
