Buttercup - Buttercup

Japanese:
Buttercup - Buttercup

A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family (APG classification: Ranunculaceae). The stem is 30-60 cm tall, erect, branches at the top, and densely covered with pubescence. The leaves are simple and have 3-5 lobes, and are called umanoashigata (horse leg shape) because of their circular shape, which is the official Japanese name. Buttercup was originally the name of a cultivated double-flowered plant. The flowers are golden yellow, about 2 cm in diameter, and grow in sparse racemes from April to June. The sepals are green and the five petals are very shiny. This is because a layer of cells containing yellow carotenoid pigments is located beneath the layer of cells densely containing starch granules, which reflects sunlight. The fruit is an achene, and the tip of the style does not bend. It commonly grows in mountainous and hilly areas throughout Japan. It is a poisonous plant, but is also used for medicinal purposes. There are approximately 550 species of Ranunculaceae in the world, with 27 species growing wild in Japan. These are divided into two groups: the aquatic white-flowered buttercups and the terrestrial yellow-flowered buttercups.
