...It was a powerful sect of Hinayana Buddhism, which was disparagingly called Hinayana Buddhism by Mahayana Buddhism. In Sanskrit, it is called Mahāsaṅghika, and in the Pāli Canon, Upāsakajanālankāra, it is called Mahāsaṅghiya. Around 100 years after the death of Shakyamuni (463-383 BC), the founder of Buddhism, an incident called the Ten Illegal Things occurred in Vaishali, northern India.
