Located in the southwestern tip of Colorado, USA, it became a national park in 1906. It is the only Native American prehistoric site among the 48 national parks. Farmers known as Basketmakers began living in the shade of rocks in this area about 2,000 years ago, but between the 5th and 8th centuries, they built dwellings made of logs and plastered with mud, and began using bows and arrows. From the 8th to 12th centuries, they built villages with houses lined up in a bow shape on the mesa plateau, and cultivated fields for corn and other crops nearby.
