A butterfly of the Nymphalidae family in the Lepidoptera order. It is the largest species of Nymphalidae found in Japan, with a forewing length of 40 to 50 mm. The upper surface of the wings is brownish black with scattered yellowish-white markings, but in males the base half is a beautiful purple, and the markings there are white. Females are slightly larger than males and lack the purple part. The underside of the wings, the tips of the forewings and the entire hindwings are yellow. The larvae feed on the leaves of the Chinese hackberry tree and overwinter in the third instar. Adults emerge from June to August, preferring sap and flying high up in the trees. They are distributed throughout Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and China. In 1957, it was designated the national butterfly of Japan by the Entomological Society of Japan.
