A city in northern Lithuania, about 190 km northwest of the capital, Vilnius. Known since the 14th century, the city has developed rapidly since a textile factory was built in the 18th century, and a large leather factory and shoe factory were built in the late 19th century. The bicycle manufacturing industry is also thriving, and there are also factories producing furniture, confectionery, canned goods, and breweries. Population: 149,000 (1992 estimate).
