Šiauliai (English spelling)

A city in northern Lithuania, about 190 km northwest of the capital, Vilnius. Known since the 14th century, the city has developed rapidly since a textile factory was built in the 18th century, and a large leather factory and shoe factory were built in the late 19th century. The bicycle manufacturing industry is also thriving, and there are also factories producing furniture, confectionery, canned goods, and breweries. Population: 149,000 (1992 estimate).

リトアニア北部の都市。首都ビリニュスの北西約 190kmにある。 14世紀から知られる町であるが，18世紀に繊維工場，19世紀後半に大規模な皮革工場，製靴工場が建設されて以来急速に発展。自転車製造工業も盛んで，家具，製菓，缶詰，醸造などの工場も立地する。人口 14万 9000 (1992推計) 。
