A highway that connected Kyoto and Osaka in the early modern period. It was also called the Kyoto Road, the Osaka Highway, and the Kawachi Road. It began in 1594 when Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the Bunroku Levee on the left bank of the Yodo River and used the embankment road as a shortcut between Fushimi and Osaka. The Edo Shogunate further improved the road and established four post stations: Fushimi, Yodo, Hirakata, and Moriguchi. It also considered this highway to be an extension of the Tokaido and placed it under the jurisdiction of the road magistrate. Since boat transport on the Yodo River was often used to travel down from Fushimi to Osaka, most of the relays of people and horses at Hirakata and Moriguchi were for those traveling up the river. The Kii Tokugawa, Aki Asano, Tosa Yamauchi, and Awa Hachisuka families used this highway for their alternate attendance, and Ryukyu envoys also passed through this highway. → Related topics Hirakata [city] | Moriguchi [city] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
