…In the latter half of the 18th century, influenced by the English “ballad opera,” it became popular in Germany and Austria. In 1743, Charles Coffey’s (?-1745) ballad opera “The Devil to Pay” was translated into German and performed under the title “Der Teufel ist los” in Berlin, which led to the birth of Singspiel. First, in 1752, JC Standtfuss (died around 1759) added new music to this German translation in Leipzig, which caused a sensation, and in 1759 he released “The Merry Shoemaker.” …
