The heat released or absorbed when a solution of a certain concentration is diluted by adding more solvent. The magnitude of the heat of dilution is related to the concentration of the solution, and is smaller the lower the solute concentration. Heat of dilution can be expressed as integral heat of dilution and differential heat of dilution. Integral heat of dilution is the total amount of heat that enters or leaves when a solution of a certain concentration containing 1 mol of solute is diluted to a different concentration by adding solvent, and differential heat of dilution is the amount of heat that enters or leaves when 1 mol of solvent is added to a large amount of solution of a constant concentration.
