Jähns, FW (English spelling)

...translate as indicator motive. The term was proposed by Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns (1809-88) in 1871, and was first discussed in relation to Wagner's music dramas in Hans von Wolzogen's (1848-1938) treatise on the Ring of the Nibelung (1876). Wagner himself rejected the term leitmotif (he used terms such as "Grundthema" and "Ahnungsmotiv"), but this technique was used extremely effectively as a means of dramatic and psychological development of the story.
