A passerine bird of the lark family. Total length 17 cm (illustration). The underside is sandy or brown, the forehead, cheeks, and chest are black, and the brow and throat are yellow. In the breeding season, males have a pair of black horn-like crests on their heads. In Eurasia, this bird breeds in the tundra and highlands of the south, and in winter it migrates to open sparse grasslands in the temperate lowlands, coasts, and snow-free steppes, where it hibernates in small flocks. In North America, where no other species of lark are found, it has expanded its distribution to almost all open areas, from tundra to grasslands and deserts, and has even reached the highlands of Colombia in South America.
