Nikolay Pavlovich Akimov

Soviet director and stage designer. He began his career as a stage designer in 1922 and as a director in 1929, and was noted for his cutting-edge sensibility and experimental pursuit of new means of expression. His 1932 production of Hamlet is famous for its eccentric caricatured interpretation. He produced many satirical comedies, and from 1935 he was active as the chief director of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Comedy Theatre, where he is credited with premiering Schwartz's play. From 1960 he trained the next generation of performers as a professor at the Leningrad State University of Theater.

ソ連の演出家、舞台美術家。1922年から舞台美術家として、1929年からは演出家としてもデビューし、先鋭な時代感覚、新しい表現手段の実験的な追究で注目される。1932年演出の『ハムレット』はとっぴな戯画的解釈で有名。風刺喜劇を数多く手がけ、1935年からレニングラード（サンクト・ペテルブルグ）の喜劇劇場の主任演出家として活躍し、シュワルツの戯曲を初演した功績は大きい。1960年からレニングラード演劇大学教授として後進を育成した。
