A Sumerian goddess. Some of her characteristics were inherited by the great Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar. Her husband was Dumuzi, the predecessor of Tammuz. Once, as the queen of heaven, she visited her sister Ereshkigal, the queen of the underworld. However, in accordance with the laws of the underworld, as she passed through the seven gates, her magnificent clothes were stripped off one by one, and when she was brought naked before Ereshkigal, she was subjected to the "death gaze" of the gods of the underworld and became a corpse. With the intervention of the god Enki (→ Ea), Inanna was resurrected and was able to return to the upper world, but at that time, she handed over her husband Dumuzi to the messenger from the underworld who was accompanying her as her substitute (→ Descent to Hell).
