A carnivorous mammal of the Canidae family that feeds mainly on insects (illustration). It is found in the grasslands of eastern Africa (from Ethiopia to Tanzania) and southwestern Africa (Namibia and South Africa). It has a body length of 50-70 cm, a tail length of 25-35 cm, and a weight of 2.5-5 kg. As the name suggests, its ears are unusually large, measuring around 10 cm. The upper surface of its body is gray-brown, while the front and outer surfaces of its tail and limbs and its face are black-brown. At first glance it resembles a fox, but its head is smaller and it has one or two more pairs of molars on both the top and bottom, and a total of 46-50 teeth, compared to the 42 of most canids such as foxes, raccoon dogs, and dogs.
