1893‐1986 Hungarian physiologist and biochemist. He studied at universities in Budapest, Prague, and other cities, and discovered ascorbic acid (hexuronic acid, vitamin C) and its role in redox reactions in the body in the Netherlands. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937 for this achievement. He then turned to research into muscle contraction, and discovered that actomyosin produced outside the body contracts using ATP, an energy source, opening the door to research into contraction mechanisms at the molecular level. In 1947, he moved to the United States and worked at the Woods Hole Marine Laboratory. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
