Omiya [city] - Omiya
An old city in the southeastern part of Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. The central part is the Omiya Plateau, the eastern part is the Ayase River, and the southwest part is the lowlands of the Arakawa River. The central city in the center of the plateau was the location of the ancient Musashi provincial capital, and was a temple town of Hikawa Shrine, Ichinomiya, Musashi Province. In the early modern period, it developed as a post town on the Nakasendo road. It became a transportation city with the opening of the Tohoku Main Line in 1885 and the establishment of the Tobu Railway Materials Factory (now the JR Omiya Factory) in 1895, and developed as a satellite city of Tokyo with the electrification of the Keihin-Tohoku Line. It is also a junction of the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen lines, and the Takasaki, Kawagoe, Saikyo, and Tobu Noda lines pass through the city. Before World War II, industry was mainly silk reeling and transportation machinery, but since the 1960s, industrial parks have been developed and chemicals, precision equipment, general equipment, etc. are thriving. Since the late 1980s, the city has been developed around Omiya Station, with the development of JACK Omiya and Sonic City, and the suburbs have been rapidly developing into residential areas. Hikawa Shrine, Omiya Park, and Bonsai Town, famous for bonsai cultivation, are located to the north. In May 2001, Saitama merged with Urawa City and Yono City to form the city of Saitama. 89.37 km2 . Population: 456,164 (2000).
