This usually refers to ruthenium(III) salts. [Ruthenium(III) chloride] The chemical formula is RuCl 3 . The anhydrates are known to be α- and β-types, and the hydrates are known to be monohydrate and trihydrate. Commercially available RuCl 3 ・3H 2 O trihydrate has a composition close to that of the trihydrate. The β-type is a dark brown hair-like powder that dissolves in ethyl alcohol. It changes to the α-type at 450°C in chlorine. The α-type is a black leaf-like crystal that is insoluble in water and ethyl alcohol. The monohydrate is a black brown plate-like crystal that dissolves in water. The trihydrate is actually a regular octahedral complex called trichlorotriaquaruthenium(III) [RuCl 3 (H 2 O) 3 ], and there are two geometric isomers, mer and fac (see figure).
