Incunabula - incunabula

Incunabula - incunabula
A general term for printed books published in Europe in the 15th century (more precisely, between the 1450s, when movable type printing was invented, and December 31, 1500). It is also called the cradle or early publication period. They used type that imitated the font of manuscripts, and were sometimes printed on vellum as well as paper, and were sometimes colored like manuscripts. The word comes from the Latin word cunabula, which means cradle, and it was only in the second half of the 18th century that it came to mean printed book. The British Library's Incunabua Short Title Catalogue is a comprehensive catalog of incunabula. According to this catalog, the total number of incunabula is estimated to be about 40,000, of which about 30,000 titles currently exist, two-thirds of which are written in Latin. The German Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke began compilation in 1925, but was suspended during World War II. Publication resumed in 1978 and is still ongoing.
