Moritaro Yamada

Japanese:
Moritaro Yamada

Marxist economist. Born in Aichi Prefecture on January 29, 1897. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1923 (Taisho 12), he became an assistant professor there in 1926, where he studied Marx's theory of value and reproduction, but was arrested in 1930 (Showa 5) in the "Communist Sympathizer Incident" and retired. He then went on to study Japanese capitalism, and edited the "Lectures on the Development History of Japanese Capitalism" (1932-33) with Noro Eitaro and others. His book "Analysis of Japanese Capitalism" (1934), a collection of essays written in this "Lecture," is the quintessence of the theory of the Lecture School, and gave birth to many followers who regarded it as a holy scripture. In 1936, he was arrested in the "Com Academy Incident," which made it difficult for him to continue his research on Japanese capitalism, and from 1939 onwards he engaged in research on Chinese agriculture at the Institute of East Asian Studies. After the war, he returned to his post as professor at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo, and wrote books on land reform and subsequent agricultural issues, as well as the heavy chemical industrialization of postwar Japanese capitalism, but he never had the same strong influence as he had before the war. After retiring from the University of Tokyo in 1982, he became a professor at Senshu University and then Ryukoku University. He passed away on December 27, 1980. Coincidentally, he was born and died in the same year as Hirano Yoshitaro, who was known as the twin pillars of the lecture group.
