...An autumn-sown annual plant of the Caryophyllaceae family that blooms in clusters of small flowers in May, making it suitable for cut flowers and flower beds (illustration). Native to the Caucasus region. The plant grows to a height of 50-60cm. The leaves are lanceolate and opposite each other. It grows on many branches, and when it produces flowers, two small pedicels split out from the base and grow, repeatedly producing flowers. The flowers are white with five petals and open in a cup shape. A variant is var. carminea Hort., which has red flowers and reddish stems and leaves, but its characteristics are the same as Gypsophila. Seeds are sown in late September. ...
