...The name Silurian is taken from the old British ethnonym Silures, but the original name was given to a long geological period that included a part of the later Cambrian strata and the Ordovician and Silurian strata. Later, the name Gotlandian period came to be used for the period represented by the upper half of the strata, and to avoid various confusions, an international agreement was reached to call the first half of the Old Silurian period the Ordovician period, and the second half, i.e. the Gotlandian period, the Silurian period (in the narrow sense). During this period, marine invertebrates such as tabular corals, which were reef-building, and non-reef-building plants and animals that lived around them flourished. *Some of the terminology that refers to the "Gotlandian period" is listed below.
