Isthmus of Kra

An isthmus in Southeast Asia, near the border between southwestern Thailand in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula and the southern tip of Myanmar (Burma). It is the narrowest part of the Malay Peninsula, measuring about 40 kilometers at its narrowest point. There are lowlands and rivers from Pak Chang on the west coast on the Andaman Sea side to Chumphon on the east coast on the Gulf of Thailand side, and the watershed is not very high. Because of this location, it has become a candidate site for the construction of a canal to shorten the shipping route around the Straits of Malacca.

東南アジア、マレー半島北部のタイ南西部とミャンマー（ビルマ）南端とが接する国境付近にある地峡。マレー半島でもっとも幅が狭く、最狭部約40キロメートル。西岸のアンダマン海側のパクチャンから、東岸のタイランド湾側のチュンポンへ向けて低地および河川があり、分水嶺(ぶんすいれい)もそれほど高くない。この立地条件から、マラッカ海峡を迂回(うかい)する航路を短縮するための運河を建設する候補地となっている。
