A village in Kashima County, eastern Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 11,396 (1995). Facing the Kashima Nada Sea to the east and Lake Hinuma to the north, it is located at the northern end of the Kashima Plateau. National Route 51 runs along the eastern end of the plateau, and settlements are scattered along the route and in the Otani River basin. The main industries have been sweet potato production and pig farming on the plateau, but vegetable production has increased rapidly since the mid-1960s. Currently, the main industries are greenhouse horticulture and pig farming, and the town is one of the leading producers of prince melons in the country. 茨城県東部,鹿島郡の村。人口1万1396(1995)。東は鹿島灘,北は涸沼(ひぬま)に面し,鹿島台地の北端に位置する。台地の東端を国道51号線が通り,集落は国道沿いと大谷川流域に散在する。台地上でのサツマイモの生産と養豚を主産業としてきたが,1960年代半ばから野菜生産が急増した。現在は施設園芸と養豚が中心で,ことにプリンスメロンは全国有数の産地である。スイカや輸出用グラジオラスの球根の栽培も盛んで,ゴボウの出荷も多い。
