A village in Kashima County, eastern Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 11,396 (1995). Facing the Kashima Nada Sea to the east and Lake Hinuma to the north, it is located at the northern end of the Kashima Plateau. National Route 51 runs along the eastern end of the plateau, and settlements are scattered along the route and in the Otani River basin. The main industries have been sweet potato production and pig farming on the plateau, but vegetable production has increased rapidly since the mid-1960s. Currently, the main industries are greenhouse horticulture and pig farming, and the town is one of the leading producers of prince melons in the country. Watermelon and gladiolus bulbs for export are also thriving, and burdock is also shipped in large quantities.

Asahi [Asahi Village]

A village in Abu District, central Yamaguchi Prefecture. In 1955, Akiragi Village and Sasanami Village merged to form Asahi Village. Population 2,322 (1995). It is a mountain village in the Chugoku Mountains, with the Akiragi River, a tributary of the Abu River, flowing northeast to the north and the Sasanami River flowing northeast to the south, and settlements scattered across the valley plain. The village office used to be located in Sasanami or Akiragi, alternating every two years, but in 1994 it was fixed at Akiragi. It developed as a post town on the Onari Road connecting Hagi and Yamaguchi, and a teahouse was located in Sasanami. Soybeans, shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, and yuzu are cultivated, and beef cattle are raised, with tofu being a specialty product.

茨城県東部,鹿島郡の村。人口1万1396(1995)。東は鹿島灘,北は涸沼(ひぬま)に面し,鹿島台地の北端に位置する。台地の東端を国道51号線が通り,集落は国道沿いと大谷川流域に散在する。台地上でのサツマイモの生産と養豚を主産業としてきたが,1960年代半ばから野菜生産が急増した。現在は施設園芸と養豚が中心で,ことにプリンスメロンは全国有数の産地である。スイカや輸出用グラジオラスの球根の栽培も盛んで,ゴボウの出荷も多い。

あさひ【旭[村]】

山口県中部,阿武郡の村。1955年明木(あきらぎ)村と佐々並(ささなみ)村が合体,旭村となる。人口2322(1995)。中国山地の中にある山村で,北部に阿武川の支流明木川,南部に佐々並川が北東流し,谷底平野に集落が散在する。村役場は佐々並と明木を2年ごとに交代して置かれていたが,1994年明木に固定された。萩と山口を結ぶ御成道の宿場町として発達し,佐々並には御茶屋が置かれていた。大豆,シイタケ,エノキタケ,ユズの栽培,肉牛の飼育が行われ,特産に豆腐がある。
