Born: April 6, 1886 in Kassel, Bad Soden
Died: July 1, 1967. Freiburg German historian. He studied under H. Oncken, and was a professor at the University of Hamburg in 1924 and at the University of Freiburg from 1925. He participated in the resistance movement against Hitler and was imprisoned from 1944 to 1945. After World War II, he returned to his professorship at Freiburg and served as chairman of the German Historical Council. He took a moderate liberal stance and was particularly known for his research on German history and the German military from the 19th century onwards. His main works include Stein (2 volumes, 1931), Friedrich der Grosse (36), Die Dämonie der Macht (48), and Staatskunst und Kriegshandwerk (3 volumes, 54-65).

Died September 28, 1859. Berlin. German geographer. As a professor at the University of Berlin from 1820 onwards, he trained many geographers from European countries. He advocated the connection between historical processes and natural history and geography, and is considered to be the founder of modern geography along with Humboldt. His theoretical foundations were J. Pestalozzi's educational principles and J. Herder's theory on humanity and the environment, and he believed that accurate knowledge of the world could be obtained through keen observation of natural phenomena. His main work is Die Erdkunde im Verhältnis zur Natur und zur Geschichte des Menschen (Geography in its Relation to Nature and Human History) (2 volumes, 1817-18, 2nd edition pp. 22-59).

Died January 23, 1810, Munich. German physicist. Studied medicine at the University of Jena, where he later taught. He was mainly involved in research into electricity and electrochemistry. He is known for proposing the concept equivalent to the electrochemical series of metals (1798), his research into the electrolysis of water (1800), his discovery of the electroplating method, his pioneering research into thermoelectric currents (01), his invention of the dry cell battery (02), and the principle of storage batteries (03). He also made pioneering contributions to the chemical action of ultraviolet light (01).

German philosopher and classical philologist. Professor at the University of Tübingen. Known for his research on Plato, he examined the dating of Plato's works from the perspective of language use. His main works are "Platos Dialoge" (2 volumes, 1903, 09), "Die Kerngedanken der platonischen Philosophie" (30), and "Platonismus und Christentum" (34).

ドイツの地理学者。 1820年以降ベルリン大学教授として,ヨーロッパ諸国の多くの地理学者を育成した。歴史過程や自然史と地理学との関連を主張し,フンボルトとともに現代地理学の創始者とされている。その理論的根底は,J.ペスタロッチの教育原理と J.ヘルダーの人類と環境とに関する理論であるが,世界の正確な知識は自然現象の鋭い観察によって得られるとした。主著に『自然と人類史とのかかわりにおける地理学』 Die Erdkunde im Verhältnis zur Natur und zur Geschichte des Menschen (2巻,1817~18,2版 22~59) がある。
