In Malay and Indonesian, the word originally meant "gathering" and referred to a group of houses in a certain area, i.e. a village. In Malaysia, it was also called kampong. As in the example "What kampung are you from?", it is usually used to mean what we call buraku or mura in Japan. It can also refer to administrative districts in cities or residential areas of specific social groups (for example, Chinatown is called kampung china). It is often used as an insult, and orang kampung can mean both "village person" and "country bumpkin." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
