The first person to use the word plasma to mean "electrolytic ionized gas" was I. Langmuir of the United States in the 1920s. He confirmed that in the positive column of a glow discharge or arc discharge, for example, negatively charged electrons and positively charged ions (cations) are mixed in roughly equal proportions, creating a macroscopically neutral state, and he named this type of medium plasma, considering it to be a state of matter.
