A representative composer of British Baroque music. Born into a family of musicians, he served in the Royal Chapel Choir and in 1677, at the age of 18, became the permanent composer of the Royal String Orchestra. He held successive positions as Royal Musician, and in 1679, he became organist at Westminster Abbey. While composing music for official royal events, he also focused on creative activities for Londoners, and his plays, incidental music, and the three- or four-part round song "Catch," sung in taverns, gained widespread popularity. He composed 40 pieces of theatre music, and his Dido and Aeneas (1689) is highly regarded to this day as the first full-scale opera by an Englishman and one of the greatest operas in Britain. He also left behind four sacred pieces such as "The Ode to St. Cecilia" and anthems, and two volumes of instrumental music such as the Trio Sonatas, before dying at the early age of 36. The freshness of his music has been reevaluated in the 20th century. → Byrd / Britten / Handel → Related topics Elgar | Christian music | Peter and the Wolf | Holst | HornpipeParcelSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
