A bird of the family Loonidae, order Loon. Length 72 cm. A medium-sized waterbird that breeds in the high latitudes of Eurasia and Alaska along the Bering Strait, and migrates to the coast of the Japanese archipelago in winter. The white-spotted blue-and-white flycatcher G. pacifica breeds from the high latitudes of North America to the northeasternmost part of Eurasia. Some consider the two to be the same species, while others consider them to be different species. The white-spotted blue-and-white flycatcher is slightly smaller, at 65 cm in length. The breeding plumage of the two species differs somewhat, but their winter plumage is almost the same, making them indistinguishable in the wild.
