Born: April 20, 1893 in Barcelona [Died] December 25, 1983. Palma. Spanish painter and sculptor. He entered the art school in his hometown of Barcelona at the age of 14, and then studied at the Académie Galli in the same city. He held his first solo exhibition in 1918, and at the time showed an anti-academic style with figurative but intense colors. The following year, he went to Paris, where he interacted with Picasso, Cubist painters, and Dadaist groups, and resonated with A. Breton's theories, joining the Surrealist movement. From the late 1920s, he developed his own unique style of painting, which added decorativeness to surrealist fantasy, with humorous curves and colors, and also worked on collages. He was also active in creating ballet stage sets and murals. At the Paris World Exposition in 1938, he painted the mural "The Harvester" in the Spanish Pavilion alongside Picasso's "Guernica." He returned to Spain at the start of World War II and continued to work on his farm in Barcelona and on the island of Mallorca. In 1944 he devoted himself to ceramics and sculpture in France, and from 1947 he was also active in the United States. He also began producing prints in 1953, and exhibited his mural "Laughter" at the Osaka World Exposition in 1970. The Joan Miró Museum is located in Barcelona. His major works include "Farm" (1921-22) and the series "Dutch Interior" (28, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and others). Milo |
