Solar cosmic rays (mainly high-energy protons) and high-speed plasma flows (solar wind) emitted in conjunction with a solar flare reach the Earth on average several hours later and one to two days later, respectively, causing severe disturbances in the ionosphere for several days on a global scale, including the polar regions. Ionospheric storms disrupt various wireless communications that use radio waves propagated through the ionosphere. The abnormal radiation of electromagnetic waves accompanying a solar flare immediately causes a sudden ionospheric disturbance (the Dellinger phenomenon), but the abnormal radiation of particles causes disturbances on Earth later than the electromagnetic waves.
