Chronicles (English: dibrê hayyāmîm Hebrew)

One of the 39 books in the Old Testament. The Hebrew original is currently divided into two volumes according to the Greek translation (Septuagint), but it was originally one book. The final version of the book was probably created in the 4th to 3rd centuries BC. Its contents include genealogies starting with Adam (Vol. 1-9), the reign of David (Vol. 1-29), the reign of Solomon (Vol. 2-1-9), and the reigns of the kings of the Southern Kingdom (Judah) (Vol. 2-36). Its main theme is the description of the history of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, centered on religion (temple, rituals), based on a priestly view of history. For example, it describes the genealogies starting with Adam, and places the Southern Kingdom at the center of the nations and tribes of Israel. Furthermore, he idealizes David and Solomon, details their efforts in building the temple, and criticizes the attitude of the Judean kings toward the temple and its rituals, showing the cause and effect of the glory and failure of the southern kingdom.

『旧約聖書』39巻中の一書。ヘブライ語原典は現在、ギリシア語訳（『七十人訳聖書』）に従い、上下2巻に分けられるが、本来は一書であった。同書最終形態の成立年代は紀元前4～前3世紀であろう。その内容は、アダムを始祖とする諸系図（上1～9章）、ダビデの治世（上10～29章）、ソロモンの治世（下1～9章）および南王国（ユダ）諸王の治世（下10～36章）からなる。その主題は、祭司的歴史観に基づき、宗教（神殿、祭儀）を中心とした、南王国ユダの歴史を記述することにある。たとえば、アダムに始まる諸系図を述べて、南王国を諸民族とイスラエル諸部族の中心に位置づける。さらにダビデとソロモンを理想化し、彼らの神殿建設への尽力を詳述し、ユダ諸王の神殿と祭儀とに対する態度を批判して、南王国の栄光と挫折(ざせつ)の因果を示す。
