…It is a monumental work along with Autumn and Winter Landscape (Tokyo National Museum) in that it established a Japanese style of ink-wash landscape painting that went beyond the imitation of Song and Yuan painting. From then on, he was guaranteed freedom from worldly affairs and a life of painting, and he refined his free-flowing painting style, and his later masterpieces include Broken Ink Landscape (Tokyo National Museum) which he gave to his disciple Soen in 1595 (Meiō 4), and Eka Cutting Arm (Sainenji Temple) in 1596. Many of his later years were recorded as using cursive styles such as broken ink and splash ink, and it is believed that he achieved a uniquely Japanese style of brushwork and ink-washing that was closely related to Song and Yuan painting, along with realistic landscape composition, and that he also achieved a uniquely Japanese style that was closely related to Song and Yuan painting, in terms of the traditional brushwork and ink-washing technique. …
