[Died] November 24, 1916. Streatham was an American-born weapons inventor who was active in Britain. His name was also spelled Maxim. In America, he taught himself engineering and conducted technological research, leading to many inventions in the fields of electricity and machinery. He was awarded the Legion of Honor at the 1881 Paris World's Fair. After moving to Britain, he devoted himself to inventing weapons. In 1883, he invented the Maxim machine gun, as well as smokeless powder, compressed air torpedo launchers, and delay fuses. In 1884, he founded the Maxim Weapons Company, which became the Vickers father and son Maxim Company in 1896. The machine guns produced here became popular all over the world, and Maxim amassed enormous wealth.
