Its predecessor was the Bansho Shirabesho, an institute established by the shogunate as a central institute for Western studies during the Edo period. It was renamed the Yosho Shirabesho in 1862, and the following year it was renamed Kaiseisho, remaining until the end of the Edo period. In 1868, the new government re-established it under the name Kaisei School, which subsequently became Daigaku Minami School, Minami School, Daigaku-ku Daiichi-ichi Junior High School, and finally Kaisei School was established as a technical school in 1873. In 1874 it was renamed Tokyo Kaisei School, and in 1877 it merged with Tokyo Medical School to form the University of Tokyo, becoming the parent institution of its three faculties of law, science, and humanities. 前身は江戸時代に洋学の中心機関として幕府が設立した蕃書調所で,文久2 (1862) 年に洋書調所と改称,さらに翌年開成所と改称して幕末にいたり,明治1 (68) 年に新政府がこれを復興して開成学校と呼び,その後大学南校,南校,第一大学区第一番中学を経て,1873年に専門学校として開成学校が設置された。 74年東京開成学校と改称,77年に東京医学校と合併して東京大学を創設,その法,理,文3学部の母体となった。
