Japanese: 四番目物 - よばんめもの

A Noh play with a particular twist. Also known as miscellaneous. In the case of a Noh play with a five-act formal program, this is the fourth Noh play performed, other than the first, second, third, or fifth. Currently numbered 92. These include the jun-kaguramono (jun-wig pieces) Saigyo Sakura and Oshio, the jun-wakimono (jun-waki pieces) Ugetsu and Miwa, which are similar to waki-noh plays, the madness-inducing pieces about women and men going crazy, the playful madness piece Jinen Koji, the foreign pastime piece Kantan, the obsession-inducing pieces Kayoi Komachi and Utou that leave a delusional attachment to this world, the vengeful spirits that appear from the other world Fujito and Dojoji, the dramatic human interest pieces Shunkan and Torioi-bune, and the present-day pieces Ataka and Kosode Soga with a real man as the shite. Both are well performed.

能の曲柄。雑能とも。五番立ての正式番組による催能の場合，四番目に演ぜられる能で，初・二・三・五番目以外の能。現行92番。鬘(かつら)物に近い準鬘物の《西行桜》《小塩》，脇能物に似た準脇能物の《雨月》《三輪》，女物狂い，男物狂いの狂乱物，遊狂物の《自然(じねん)居士》，異邦的な遊楽物の《邯鄲(かんたん)》，この世に妄執(もうしゅう)を残す執心物の《通(かよい)小町》《善知鳥(うとう)》，復讐にあの世から現れる怨霊(おんりょう)物の《藤戸》《道成寺》，劇的な人情物の《俊寛》《鳥追舟》，現実の男をシテとする現在物の《安宅(あたか)》《小袖曾我》など。いずれもよく上演される。
