Japanese: アイナエ - あいなえ

A delicate annual weed of the Logaceae family (illustration). It grows in slightly damp places on roadsides and in fields. The stem is erect, 5-20 cm tall, thin, and branches out from the axils of the leaves that are clustered at the bottom. The leaves are opposite, oblong to elliptical, 5-20 mm long, and usually have three veins. The flowers are borne at the end of thin pedicels and have a white corolla with four lobes and a calyx with four lobes and pointed lobes at the ends. The calyx is persistent. The fruit, about 1.5 mm in diameter, retains the style even when ripe, and the base of the style splits open to release small seeds.
