A bird of the Psittacidae family (illustration). Also known as the Crested Cockatoo. Total length is about 50 cm. A large parrot with a white body. Its crest is long and red-tipped, and it can stand or lie down. Its beak and legs are black. It lives in forests in groups and mainly eats fruits and seeds, but sometimes comes down to the ground and digs up bulbs and tubers with its beak. It also bites into young palm trees with its powerful beak and sucks the water from inside the pith. During the breeding season, it makes a tree cavity its nest and lays 2 to 4 white eggs directly at the bottom of the cavity.

オウム目オウム科の鳥（イラスト）。別名トキサカオウム。全長約50cm。全身白色の大型のオウム。冠羽は長く，先端が赤く，立てたり伏せたりできる。くちばしと脚は黒色。森林に群れですみ，おもに果実や種子を食べるが，地上に降りて，地中から球根や塊茎をくちばしで掘り出して食べることもある。また，ヤシの若木を強力なくちばしでかみ破り，髄質内部の水を吸ったりもする。繁殖期には，樹洞を巣穴とし，その底に直接2～4個の白い卵を産む。
