An ancient city on the northern coast of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. It was the center of Cretan civilization, which is said to be the source of Aegean civilization. Excavations and investigations by A. Evans and others since 1900 have revealed its outline. At its peak, King Minos of Knossos unified the entire island of Crete and monopolized maritime rights in the eastern Mediterranean, turning Crete into a maritime kingdom trading with various regions on the east and west. At that time, Knossos was a large city consisting of a palace and the urban center surrounding it, where the royal family and aristocrats lived, and the suburbs surrounding that, where the lower classes lived. This prosperity ended around 1400 BC, and the city never regained its former prosperity.
