A heavy industry company focusing on shipbuilding and machinery. In 1853, the company established a shipyard in Ishikawajima. In 1876, it became privately owned and established Japan's first privately owned shipyard, Ishikawajima Hirano Shipyard. In 1889, the company established Ishikawajima Shipyard. In 1893, the company was renamed Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipyard, and in 1945, Ishikawajima Heavy Industries was established. In 1960, the company merged with Harima Shipyard to form Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries. In 1962, the company merged with Shibaura Sewing Machine and Ishikawajima Shibaura Precision Machinery. During this time, the company spun off many companies, including Shin Tachikawa Aircraft and Isuzu Motors. The company continued to grow through mergers. In 2007, the company changed its name to its current one. The company has also expanded into land-based divisions, aircraft jet engines, space equipment, and new industries (labor-saving and pollution prevention), and is also working on systems integration with Toshiba. 造船,機械を中心とする重工業会社。嘉永6(1853)年石川島に造船所創設。1876年個人経営となり,日本で初の民間造船所,石川島平野造船所を設立した。1889年石川島造船所設立。1893年東京石川島造船所に改称,1945年石川島重工業を設立。1960年播磨造船所と合併して石川島播磨重工業が発足。1962年芝浦ミシン,石川島芝浦精機と合併。この間新立川航空機,いすゞ自動車など多数の会社を分離設立。その後も合併を重ねて発展した。2007年現社名に変更。陸上部門や航空機用ジェットエンジン,宇宙機器,新産業(省力産業,公害防止産業)などにも進出,東芝とのシステム連携も進んでいる。
