Roman Emperor. Reigned 193. Born the son of a freed slave, he held high military positions under Emperors Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius, and became governor of Britain under Emperor Commodus. He became consul in 192. After Commodus was assassinated, he was nominated for the position of emperor. He tried to reconcile with the Senate and worked to restore financial order, but his excessive discipline policies incurred the resentment of his close associates, and he was assassinated. ローマ皇帝。在位193年。解放奴隷の子として生まれたが，アントニヌス･ピウス帝，マルクス･アウレリウス帝の治下で軍務の高職に就き，コンモドゥス帝の下でブリタニアの勅任知事となる。192年コンスルに就任。コンモドゥス帝が暗殺された後，彼は皇帝に推された。元老院との和解に努め，財政秩序の回復に尽力したが，過度な綱紀粛正策のために側近の反感をかい，暗殺された。在位期間は3ヵ月にすぎなかった。【本村凌二】
