Onikobe Plateau

...At the southern foot of Mt. Arao is the mud volcano Katayama Jigoku, and in 1975 the Onikobe geothermal power station (maximum output 12,500 kW) began operation nearby. The surrounding area is called the Onikobe Plateau and is designated as part of the Kurikoma Quasi-National Park. In addition to the beauty of the forests and streams, including the primeval beech forest, the area also boasts beautiful views of geysers and the arched Naruko Dam, and is a popular tourist destination for viewing the new greenery and autumn leaves, as well as winter skiing. The Senshu Sun Line, which runs through this area, was completed in 1965 as an industrial and tourist road, and leads to the Yokote Basin via the Onikobe Pass (830m). ...
