A region in southern Portugal. The name means "crossing the Tagus River," and refers to the area south of the river. The northeastern part is called the Alto Alentejo, and the southwestern part is called the Baixo Alentejo. It is known as a grain-producing region. Its area is about 27,000 km2 .
