A former town in Ochi County in the Gono River basin in central Shimane Prefecture. Most of the town area is forested, producing wood products, as well as tea, Chinese yam, burdock, and shiitake mushrooms. The main settlement, Kawado, located at the confluence of the Gono River and Hachinohe River, prospered through water transportation on the Gono River until the opening of the Sanko Line. 島根県中部,江の川(ごうのがわ)流域の邑智(おおち)郡の旧町。町域の大部分が山林で,木製品を産し,茶,ナガイモ,ゴボウ,シイタケも産する。江の川と八戸(やと)川の合流点にある主集落川戸は三江(さんこう)線開通まで江の川水運で栄えた。2004年10月江津市へ編入。110.10km2。3614人(2003)。
