Located about 190 km south of Moscow, this is the birthplace of LN Tolstoy. In Russian, Yasnaya means "a meadow in a bright forest," but Yasnaya is a pronunciation of yasennaya, meaning ash tree, and well reflects the land's predominantly broad-leaved trees. To the north of this area is a large forest that was built to protect against nomadic attacks, and was part of the defense of the city of Tula in central Russia. This area is described in War and Peace as "bald mountain (Luisye Gory)." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
