...Currently, there are nearly 100 plants known to have hallucinogenic properties, many of which have only recently been discovered in the New World, although a few are known from the Old World, such as the mandrake ( Mandrake , Solanaceae) in Europe, iboga ( Tabernanthe iboga , Apocynaceae) in tropical Africa, hashish ( Cannabis sativa , Mulberry family) in the Near East, and the fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) in Siberia. In the New World, there are the Mexican oroliuqui mushrooms, sacred mushrooms (mushrooms belonging to the genera Palomino, Polyporus, and Polyporus), the cactus peyote, plants of the Solanaceae genera Datura and Solandra used throughout North and South America, yajé ( Banisteriopsis caapi , B. inebrians , etc., Canthariaceae family) used in the Amazon region, and plants of the Anadenanthera genus of the Fabaceae and Virola genus of the Myristicaceae family.
