Ibn Waḥshīya (English spelling)

… [Jiro Iinuma]
[middle east]
The agricultural book kitāb al-filāḥa in Western Asia and the Islamic world, like other natural sciences, developed under the influence of Hellenistic civilization that spread to Syria and Iraq. Greek and Latin agricultural books had already been translated into Syriac by the 6th century, and Ibn Waḥshīya (early 10th century) wrote the first agricultural book in Arabic, the Nabataean Book of Agriculture, based on these translations. According to an unpublished manuscript, the book begins with a description of the properties of the soil and irrigation methods, and then goes on to provide detailed descriptions of how to cultivate wheat, barley, vegetables, fruit trees, and other crops.
